Kung Fu Flash Setup Guide: Load C64 Games from SD Card
The Kung Fu Flash cartridge lets you load CRT, PRG, and D64 files on a real Commodore 64 or Commodore 128 straight from a microSD card — no floppy disks, no cassettes, no extra hardware. This guide walks you through setup from unboxing to playing your first game.
What you need
- A Kung Fu Flash or Kung Fu Flash 2 cartridge
- A FAT-formatted microSD card (AnyRetro cartridges include a preloaded 32 GB card, depending on the variant chosen)
- A Commodore 64 or Commodore 128 (PAL and NTSC are both supported)
- Game or software files: CRT cartridge images, PRG programs, or D64 disk images
Step 1: Prepare the microSD card
Insert the microSD card into a modern PC or Mac. The card must be FAT formatted (FAT32 works well for cards up to 32 GB). Copy your files onto the card — you can organize them into folders and the built-in file browser will follow your folder structure. Both Kung Fu Flash and Kung Fu Flash 2 support the same file formats: CRT, ROM/BIN, D64/D71/D81, T64, PRG/P00, UPD, and TXT/NFO/1ST.
Step 2: Insert the cartridge
Turn your Commodore 64 or 128 off before inserting or removing any cartridge. Insert the microSD card into the slot on the Kung Fu Flash, then push the cartridge firmly into the expansion port on the back of the machine with the label facing up.
Step 3: Browse and launch
Power the computer on and the Kung Fu Flash file browser appears automatically. Navigate to a file with the cursor keys and press RETURN to launch it. Press SHIFT+RETURN to open file options, such as mounting a disk image or directory. Press F5 to open the settings menu.
Step 4: Keep the firmware up to date
AnyRetro cartridges ship with the latest firmware preloaded. When a new version is released, download it from our firmware downloads page, copy the update file to the microSD card, and launch it from the browser — this is the easiest way to update on both models. Both Kung Fu Flash and Kung Fu Flash 2 also have a USB port and can be updated over USB if you prefer.
Kung Fu Flash 2 extra: REU emulation
The newer Kung Fu Flash 2 can emulate a 1 MB REU (RAM Expansion Unit) at the same time as disk drive emulation. Enable it in the settings menu (F5); it is active when launching programs, mounting disk images, or starting BASIC from the launcher (F6 on C128, F7 on C64). The REU is not active while emulating CRT cartridges. Its USB port can also transfer programs and disk images to and from a PC using the EasyFlash 3 USB protocol.
Troubleshooting tips
- Blank screen at power on: Power off and reseat the cartridge in the expansion port. Make sure the microSD card is fully inserted.
- Card not detected: Reformat the card as FAT32 on a modern computer and copy the files back over.
- A specific game will not load: Try a different image format of the same title (for example, a CRT version instead of D64). Some titles that rely on exotic fastloaders work best in a specific format.
